The Benefits of Face Masks

Face masks could offer an important tool for contributing to the management of community transmission of Covid-19 within the general population. The use of face masks, including reusable cloth masks, could reduce onward transmission if widely used in situations where social distancing is not possible. This is according to The Data Evaluation and Learning for Viral Epidemics (DELVE) Group, which has produced the first comprehensive advice on the use of face coverings to reduce the transmission Rate [R].

Skill Mill cares both about the environment but also about helping others. It’s our own value proposition. Our reusable masks have a number of benefits:

  • Socially good: We are a certified Social Enterprise and member of Social Enterprise UK, buying from us means you are ‘buying social’. ‘Buying social’ is about using your money, as an individual or an organisation, to create a positive impact on the world we live in. When you buy from a social enterprise you are choosing to spend your money with a business that is giving something back, reinvesting their profits to address the most pressing issues in society.

  • Environmentally friendly: Disposable masks should not be worn for longer than one day. The amount of trash currently being generated from their use is substantial and effects on the environment are far-reaching. The wearing of reusable masks by the public will avoid tonnes of contaminated plastic waste being generated.

  • Protecting the NHS: By the general public using homemade reusable facemasks, supplies of disposal surgical facemasks are secured for frontline NHS staff and other care workers.

  • Practicality: Our masks are of the highest quality (2 ply inner cotton layer and outer linen layer) and very comfortable. Their durability makes them suitable for all kinds of wear. They do not cause glasses to fog up and won’t need to be adjusted every time you use them and they are safe.

  • Personalisation: Our masks can be supplied with your own logo (embroidered on cloth masks and printed on mesh/sports masks). This adds uniqueness to your mask, and makes your business stand out. Our masks are also available without a logo if you prefer.

Most importantly, by wearing masks we protect each other. Government guidelines recommend wearing a face covering if you can. Evidence suggests that wearing a face covering does not protect you but if you are infected but have not yet developed symptoms, it provides protection for others you come into close contact with.

“….wearing masks is altruistic…...it will help protect others but if we all wear them then we protect each other”.

Dr Venki Ramakrishnan, President of The Royal Society, Andrew Marr Show, 24th May 2020.
