Salary: £17,500 (0.5 FTE) 

Location: South of England/Surrey/Hybrid 

Contract Type: Part-Time, fixed term (2 years) 

Reports To: Operational Manager (South) 

Service Area: The Skill Mill 

Place of Work: Remote with the expectation of some regional travel

About The Skill Mill 
The Skill Mill is a social enterprise that provides employment opportunities for young people with criminal convictions. Through paid work in environmental projects, horticulture and grounds maintenance, we help young people develop skills, confidence and positive futures while creating benefits for local communities and the environment.

The Role

This is an opportunity to make a lasting difference to the lives of young people as they move towards education, training and employment.

As a Pathways Advisor, you will work alongside young people throughout their journey with The Skill Mill, helping them identify their aspirations, overcome barriers and access opportunities that support their long-term goals.

You will build trusted relationships, provide practical employability support, and work with employers, training providers and partner organisations to help young people progress into sustainable opportunities.

What You'll Do

Support Young People To:

  • Identify their strengths, interests and future goals.

  • Develop confidence and motivation for employment and learning.

  • Access education, training, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

  • Build employability skills, including CV writing, interview preparation and workplace readiness.

  • Overcome barriers that may be preventing them from progressing.

  • Create and achieve personalised action plans that support their next steps.

 

Work With Partners To:

  • Develop routes into employment, education and training.

  • Connect young people with employers, colleges, training providers and support services.

  • Advocate for young people facing complex barriers.

  • Coordinate support with Youth Justice Services, local authorities and other agencies.

  • Identify opportunities that lead to positive and sustainable outcomes.

 

You will provide a combination of remote and face-to-face support, beginning during the young person's six-month placement and continuing through their transition into education, training or employment.

 

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who believes in the potential of young people and can support them to achieve positive futures.

 

You'll have:

  • Experience supporting young people into education, training or employment.

  • An understanding of the challenges faced by young people with offending histories.

  • Strong relationship-building and motivational skills.

  • Experience creating action plans and supporting progression outcomes.

  • Knowledge of employment, training and education opportunities.

  • Good IT and record-keeping skills.

  • The ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload.

  • A collaborative approach to working with partners and stakeholders.

  • Enhanced DBS check required.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience working within youth justice, youth work or social enterprise settings.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice.

  • Experience working with employers and training providers.

  • A relevant qualification in careers guidance, youth work, coaching or a related field.

  • Understanding of supported employment approaches and progression pathways.
