Something For the Future: Save the Date & Help Save the Planet

May 4, 2020

As we all try to cope with being cooped up at home during these difficult times across the UK and most of the world, we would like to share some positive news with you all. World Cleanup Day 2020 is still planned to take place on the 19th September. The event is an opportunity to join a global community and take part in the biggest waste collection day in history. It goes further than cleaning up trash; the vision is a clean and healthy waste free planet. Together we are able to tackle environmental challenges by mobilising millions of positive-minded people into coordinated local and global actions.

The Skill Mill is once again the UK’s lead organisation for World Cleanup Day - part of the Let's Do It World network. The event last year was a huge success, attracting over 20 million people across 179 countries. Cleanups were organised in countries and territories on all continents, and for the UK the event was the biggest yet. Participants included large corporations, local authorities, small businesses, community groups, and individuals. The Skill Mill helped to organise over 200 events across the UK and the feedback we received was outstanding.

During the lockdown many of us have taken the time to notice and appreciate more than ever what is around us. Especially when taking daily walks or jogging around our local parks, streets and neighbourhoods. We are appreciating more than ever the birds, trees, other people, quieter roads, or interesting buildings. Cleaning up our local areas enables us to take pride in what we have around us, and spending time there becomes more pleasurable and precious. Community spirit in the UK has never been stronger. Here is an opportunity to keep that going.

Studies have shown that lockdown has had a negative impact on our health and wellbeing. Spending limited time outdoors with restrictions on socialisation has been tough for many of us. World Cleanup Day is a big collaboration project – only together can we make our world clean again. It is a chance to reunite after our time spent in lockdown, and make the most of the great outdoors. It has been consistently proven that spending time in nature has a positive impact on our mental wellbeing, as well as being great for our physical health too! This, in turn, can lower the burden on the NHS from ill-health.

Taking part in World Cleanup Day is easy. You can simply organise your own cleanup event or take part in an existing one. Individuals, groups, businesses and corporations can all participate. You can register your event and receive your free information pack by signing up on our webpage. You can also follow our Facebook and Twitter pages for regular updates and more information and see what we achieved last year.

Perhaps we will need to be 2 metres apart and take some extra precautions but that shouldn’t stop us from getting out there in our droves. Make Britain beautiful again and keep it that way!

See you then!
